Popularly known as Baba Maharaj, Swami Nihswananda was born on 22nd Feb. 1922 in a village near Trivandrum. He completed his college education in 1942 and joined the order at Bangalore Vedanta College in 1942. He was initiated by Swami Virajanandaji and received Sannyasa from Swami Sankaranandaji in 1952. He was fortunate to have a holy company of Swami Srivasanandaji, a disciple of Holy Mother.
Besides his joining centre, he served at Mangalore, Rangoon Sevashrama(now defunct), Rajkot (1965 to 1972), Thiruvananthapuram (1972 to 1975 & 1978 to 1981) and Mumbai (1975 to 1978) centres. He was the Head of Ootacamund. In Delhi he was the officiating Secretary for about four Years (18th June, 1983 to Nov. 1983 and March, 1985 to Dec. 1985).
He led a retired life for about two decades, during which period he stayed at Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram and Nettayam Ashramas.
He passed away on 24 July 2009. Simple, austere and jovial by nature, the Swami was respected by all for his sadhu qualities.
